Top Tips for Storing Household Goods in a Garage

Posted on February 27, 2018 by Henry

Storing away your everyday household goods could be the result of many different situations. It could be because you want to declutter your home, redecorate a room or because your kids have moved out. Whatever it may be, inStore Storage has advice to hand.

Choosing the right Container.

Cardboard or Plastic?

Cardboard boxes are cheaper and easier to get hold of, easier to carry. If you go to your local Storage store, they will be pretty durable, have handles and you can pretty much stack them wherever you choose.

Yet, the downsides of cardboard simply outdo the pros. They are susceptible to heat and humidity and break down quickly. Thus, as a long-term option, your items could end up ruined and mildew or mould will start growing in the box.

This leaves plastic containers as probably the best option for long-term storage and yes, they cost a little more, but they will save your items from moths and mould.

Clean your Garage and Organise your Space.

Any garage is often the go to place to store all your unwanted stuff, so, when it comes to moving your goods out of your home and into your garage, you might find that it is already full.

Cleaning your garage is also a great way to get rid of any rubbish, unused or unwanted items that have just been lying around. Once the garage, or the space in your garage, is clean, you might find that you can store much more than you originally thought, which can always be a bonus.

Avoid Hazardous Areas

So, don’t cover up drains with boxes – don’t block access to fuse boxes or ventilation systems – don’t forget to make space for doorways. Simple really.

Stacking and Storing

The first thing to do is to make sure your boxes, whether cardboard or plastic, are labelled properly. This can make it a lot easier to find your precious belongings.

When stacking shelves, create an order – items frequently used should be stored towards the front – stored at eye level – large and heavy boxes should be stored at the bottom – items rarely used stored at the top – try to avoid storing goods directly on the floor.

If you want to store anything valuable, make sure that it is stored in a secure and lockable cabinet.

However, if after you have cleaned your garage and found that you have even less space than you thought – because you wanted to keep everything in it – then why not use one of inStore’s Storage Units as an alternative? We make it so easy for you.

Top 5 Tips on What Not To Store

Posted on February 20, 2018 by Henry

Our Top 5 Recommendations for what not to store may seem simple and self explanatory enough, but you’d be surprised by how many people try to put these into storage.

Animals, Humans and Plants.

Alive or Dead – Storage Units are not viable places that people can keep their pets in whilst they go away on holiday – and we have been asked to.

We do not permit residency of any kind in any of our storage units – for your safety and for the safety of our other client’s storage units.

Storage Units do not have any real light – once the doors are closed, then there’s no sunlight inside them – therefore, you may find your plants not looking how you originally put them in.

Tyres

You will find a number of Storage companies will say no to tyres and the reason for this is dead simple – it costs a lot of money to dispose of tyres and we often get stung with the bill when people leave them behind.

Combustible, Flammable, Hazardous or Toxic Materials.

Simply ask yourself – “If I add fire to this, would it explode?” If you can say yes, then you won’t be allowed to store it in most Storage facilities.

This includes compressed gas tanks, fuel of any kind, lamp and motor oil, grease, fertilisers, paint, cleaners, chemicals, toxic or biological waste. Asbestos or products which may contain asbestos are not permitted and nor are fireworks.

Electronics

Storing items in Storage Units means you should be prepared for temperature changes. Therefore, electrical units will suffer with sudden changes of temperatures in storage units unless it is catered for them specifically. This will have a detrimental effect on your electrical equipment and may cause them to break.

Anything stolen or illegal in the UK.

Our Storage Units are based in the UK and therefore we follow the UK laws as to what is considered stolen or illegal. Therefore, if any of your items are deemed illegal or stolen, then you can not store it with us.

We do have a full list of things that we do not permit or recommend not storing in our Storage Units and, for more information on what you can and cannot store, please contact us.

How to Declutter Your Business: What to Store and What to Throw Away

Posted on January 29, 2018 by Henry

The coming of spring is the perfect time to give your business a bit of a spring clean and declutter. It is always amazing how much paraphernalia accumulates overt the year and it is definitely worth taking a small amount of time at the end of each day to get your decluttering done and dusted.

Start with your office space

This more manageable task will help to get you in the right frame of mind to tackle the more important jobs. This doesn’t mean that you have to completely redecorate your office but perhaps make sure that any old equipment is recycled and that your desk is tidy and all of your files are in order. Encourage others to do so and make sure you take the time to properly review the way that your works pace is arranged – it makes a lot more difference than you think.

Buy new supplies

Once you have sorted through office clutter, now is the time to think about new office supplies which will help you keep your work space clear throughout the year. For example, colour coded files and labels to help you arrange and order them.

Is your software up to date?

This is another important part of decluttering your business. Up to date systems improve efficiency in a business. More modern Customer Relationship Management Software will enable you to keep better tabs on sales, manage customer information and retain your client base.

Look over your inventory

Unnecessary waste is regularly caused by businesses overstocking. Make sure you take the time to look over your wareshouse and speak to staff members. You want to be efficient in your storage of stock and insure that you are not constantly paying for the storage of unsold stock. Old and damaged stock should also be another concern.

Easter is here! Put a Spring Cleaning in your step

It’s that time of year again, when Spring Cleaning and all that it entails comes to the fore, but before we bore you to much with our handy tips some interesting facts for you:

In many cultures around the world, the egg is a symbol of new life, fertility and rebirth. For thousands of years, Iranians and others have decorated eggs on Nowruz (header image), the Iranian New Year that falls on the spring equinox. Interesting no? For Christians, the Easter egg is symbolic of the resurrection of Jesus Christ as we all know I’m sure (boring).

Spring Cleaning and Storing Your Belongings away with inStore

The story of the Easter Bunny is thought to have become common in the 19th century. Rabbits usually give birth to a big litter of babies (called kittens), so they became a symbol of new life. Legend has it that the Easter bunny lays, decorates and hides Easter eggs as they are also a symbol of new life.

Easter is also a time for seeing family, taking a short break, maybe the first BBQ or grass cut? even the odd egg if your lucky. Its that time of year where all the windows can be opened and the house can breath. The first sunny days start showing as the daffodils come to their peak and we hope the sun starts to take the batten in the race for the summer.

Here at inStore we know what its like when you need space, and this is the time of year for spring cleaning, so, if you are having a summer wedding, anniversary party, garage clear out, moving date or anything to do with needing somewhere to safely and securely keep your possessions short term or long term. We are here for you, we understand, its our job.

Storage in Mere

Spring is here in Mere (nearly) and as the morning frost has its last word the sun starts to take its place. There is something about spring and the sunny mornings and evening on the horizon that makes me want to have a spring clear out ready for what summer has to bring.

Our main warehouse in Mere, Wiltshire just off the A-303 offers the perfect place to stash your spring clear out items, whether you have a small bungalow or a gigantic office, we all need our space to think. That is where we come in.

Residential, Specialist, Removals, Commercial, Business, Relocation

We can secure insurance on any item stored with us, we wrap & pack, fetch & carry, store & more – all on demand.

inStore started in Wincanton as a family venture combining practical skills and experience with traditional values. Our work ethic is focused exclusively towards you, the customer. And our mission is to create a calm, stress-free, experience for every customer, every time so that you keep on coming back. inStore takes the load, literally.

Mere is a small town, It lies at the extreme southwestern tip of the Salisbury Plain, close to the borders of Somerset and Dorset. The A-303 truck road passed through Mere until a bypass was built on the northern edge of the town in 1976. There is an old market square (although markets have not been held for several years), a chiming town clock and large 15th-century parish church.

The steep slope of Castle Hill rises from the northwestern side of Mere. Local industry and commerce includes the Hill Brush company which was based next door to our warehouse, but has very recently moved to the outskirts on the other side of Mere having build a brand new factory.

Less is more at inStore’s Storage near Shaftesbury Depot

Storage Near Shaftesbury

How can it be – it’s mans greatest passion is collecting things… from all over and in every format we’ve collected throughout history and in today’s modern world it is no different, we delight in it, from excess garden furniture to piled high garages and attics. Our depot for storage near Shaftesbury is no exception and although we are not personally doing the collecting – we are full to capacity with other peoples collections and it is fascinating in it’s own way.

Don’t worry, dear customers, I am not going to divulge any examples or judgements about what we store or why or how, other than to say we are open for business – delighted in your company and serious about your privacy and concerns.

Less is more.

People have in the past asked ‘why Storage’ and more pertinently ‘why storage near Shaftesbury’ of all places.  It’s a good question and the answer lies in how we as a society deal with our possessions, we are intensely addicted to collecting and no matter how much we throw away (and there’s far to much of that going on) – we still seem to put great value on our possessions and our families possessions.  The psychology of the way our society has built up it’s possessions is a topic I hope to return to frequently as I write more and more on this News section of our website.

Be it clearing out a close relative’s house following bereavement, or an attic or a garage clearance – be it in London, Mars or just near Shaftesbury – it’s life as we know.  These things need to happen and we’re here to help the local area for storage near Shaftesbury.

For us at inStore – we understand storage and why people use it, like it and appreciate it and our aim is to make it as friendly, professional and as secure and safe as we can.

Declutter Tips Guide 2017

The inStore Declutter Tips Guide 2017

As we enter the new year, jumping in with full gusto, we like to think that our lives might be a bit clearer, a bit more open to what the new year can bring us. Whether that’s a new job, new house, new person or even just a new mower your thinking about buying, but have no room in the garage. Here at inStore we’re going to give some pointers (or you could say friendly guidance) in the direction of a new you for a new year. This new you will be the ‘Decluttered’ you. To declutter or not to declutter, that is the question! If your antique furniture is clogging up your garage so Granny’s old table is blocking the door and you have a whole room just to store the paintings you can’t fit on the walls then it’s time to start decluttering now!

  1. Why not try ‘The Oprah Winfrey wardrobe Hanger Test’
This experiment in which Oprah Winfrey has said to have invented is a way of working out what you do and don’t wear in your wardrobe, the trick is to hang everything with the hangers facing one direction, then when you come to use an item you put it back by turning around the hanger the other way, as weeks go on you start to see what you really don’t wear and can give it to a charity shop.
  2. The ask yourself the ‘how much its worth’ question
Scientist has found that you can better declutter by asking creative questions like ‘how much would I pay for this?’ this helps to really know if you have an undying love for your item or whether its just charitable goods.
  3. The inStore trick
Here at inStore we think the best way to declutter your life is to keep those ever important things, throwing them away is rather bad for the conscious and the environment, so why not keep your beloved children’s school paintings, or your parents hand-me- down crockery in our well equipped warehouse.

New Year Resolutions

inStore’s New Year Resolutions

It’s that time of year again, we have all made our New Year Resolutions and we are sticking to them … aren’t we?

One of the most popular resolutions has to be the – ‘I must join the gym this year’ resolution. However we all know the likelihood of those resolutely muttered words coming to fruition.

The other big resolution is the ‘I’m going to stop eating any chocolate, even on top of tiny biscuits’ one. Now I have always thought that this one in particular is a tricky little critter to follow through – with Easter on the horizon like an evil Easter-bunny flaunting his basket.

Last but not least, is the crown and glory resolution of – ‘I have got to clear out all the clutter of my life!’ This one normally relates to the daunting thought of all that stuff that is clogging up the spare room, or the loft that’s bursting with family items that you can’t part with, or the space under your bed that’s screaming for fresh air. As we approach the spring cleaning period at this time of year, why not let us help you help yourself. You don’t have to get rid of anything! You can store belongings that are taking up needed space in your home (not for good, for safe keeping) and you can have a clearer home. Clearer home – cleaner mind. At least until next year when you somehow manage to accumulate nearly the same amount of stuff all over again. If so, we will still be here to help you.

Conclusion:

Take a minimalist approach to your life this year, clear your things, clear your mind and order your life – with help from us at inStore. We may not be able to force you through those gym doors, or take that tempting easter egg out of your mitts but we can help you with all your storage needs!
